A Summers Portrait (Uncomplicated things)

Soft summer breeze in fluttering leaves,
homemade lemonade, strawberries and cream.
Dappled shade under fruiting apple trees.

Grandpa's, creaky, rickety rocking chair
where rests his moth eaten Panama hat.
Memories full of mouth-watering fare.

Squeals of laughter riding the garden gate,
dip in, dip out of a water sprinkler.
Fine innocence of a summers portrait.

  9. The listing style works very well for this theme. How easily we forget the uncomplicated things which bring so much comfort and joy.

  11. These days I am enjoying nostalgic things, Julian. So your poem was most welcome. There was something about dipping into and out of the sprinklers and drinking homemade (not store-bought) lemonade. Lovely reminiscences, Julian!

  20. I enjoyed reading this, Julian. I wonder why people always depict 'Grandpa' as being somewhat dowdy and shabby and using old stuff? (I'm a grandpa, six times, great grandpa four times)

  21. The image of the garden gate, and the simple pleasure derived from making such a commonplace and functional object a plaything, epitomises the very best of childhood in an pre-digital age. Well done Julian.
