Some writers have different criteria regarding flash fiction, however a generalisation is a word count from 150 to 1000 words. The narrative should cover the main points leaving the reader to use their imagination to fill out the rest of the story. I read an article where a writer of flash fiction said "the story should be written in a flash and read in a flash," I agree with maybe reading in a flash however I certainly take longer than a flash to write in this style.
