The last laugh

I wonder, do we all get to a stage in life when the vocabulary of the self obsessed younger generation begins to sound ridiculous, as the lack of our comprehension and intolerance of this over empowered breed increases with our ageing days: or is it just me?

For example: "I was like" is now used as part of their sentence construction and is, just so like out of context: the rant continues.

I was like, so angry.
No, no, no, you were either angry or you were not angry.

Can I get a glass of wine?
No, you can not get it, the bar tender is there to serve you.

OMG, I was so but, yeah.
What the bloody hell is that one about?

The Last Laugh

Reading a book in a trendy café
Hand wrapped around a steaming latte;
Mochas, Cappuccinos, whatever next,
Those trendy drinks can make me so vexed.

Huddled at a table some youngsters sat,
And then she said, how cool is that,
Oh my god, is that the latest smart phone
It’s so like, can I get one of my own.

To me, it often makes no sense at all,
English is becoming quite farcical,
I try to keep up with the latest fads,
When did I turn into my dear old dad?

I may be old but I can hold in a fart
And when I can’t, I’ll have the last laugh.

  1. Someone I admire greatly once said, "Language doesn't so much evolve as it mutates."

  3. I know exactly what you mean. I worry about the survival of the English language. What will their children speak?

  4. May I went with please but Can I? - the answer was always 'I am sure you can - you look able enough'. I too utterly dislike the 'like' interspersion of speech - are we being prepared to converse with robots? Keep carping with the last laugh

  5. Ha.. I wonder too, but mostly in Swedish of course... but I think language is always changing, maybe for the sole purpose of us all feeling old.

  6. I agree with Laura! The English language these days is being ruined by youngsters and their obsession with 'slang'.. oh the horror!!

  11. When I get too dismayed at the oddities displayed by the youth of today, I think back to when I was young and laugh. 80's slang wasn't much better and at least today's youth have the good sense to stay away from fluorescent nylon track suits.

  12. Don't worry. History repeats itself. These youngsters will be saying the same things about their children's slang. Hopefully, English will survive.

  13. Oh I agree Julian... English is dying a slow, painful death and I think we have a whole new generation that cannot write at all, they're so used to typing and now even worse, voice commands.

  14. Agree
The corruption of a beautiful language is upsetting to witness.
Pleased to hear you have your wind emission apparatus under control LOL
So, have you noticed how every sentence now begins with "So"
So, why do you think that is?
    So, what's your problem?
So, how come former cool people turn into crotchety grumps?
So, like it must be an old age thing.
So, like maybe we should put old people on ice floats and send them out to sea.
So, perhaps this comment could be categorised as spittle flecked rant:)
