Urban Arteries

Spice scented air, colours, sounds.
Urban markets are vibrant with life.
                          *
Droning birds carry deadly intent,
fuelled by cataclysmic opinions.
A loved city, bombed and broken,
screams ricochet off shattered lives.
Refugees flee to the edge of insane,
shadows of home facing their backs.
                            *
Many lost, souls rise in dust laden air.
Urban arteries are running with blood.

  1. It is happening everyday and not many seems to care. The political will is lacking as it runs smack against corporate greed which determines the rights and wrongs according to their whims.

  2. I love all the contrasts of urban life, the fine and foul coming together... the metaphor of a blood stream is excellent.

  3. What an apt and succinct commentary of life in many places (particularly the middle east) today. Living in a safe western world we just cannot imagine how families cope with the situation.

  4. Flee to the edge of insane... such an apt description Julian.. it seems futile to just sit and hope for peace.

  5. Wow! You convey the contrast between war and peace very well.. makes me wonder why people are so intent on choosing the former.

  6. This is so sad and a reminder of what life is like for some. There is a thin line between sane and insanity when you are thrust into the midst of chaos.

  13. The terrible thing about this killing and torment is that it is but a game for those in power. Whetherit be religion, ethnicity, politics or or just the craving for power we are all expendable for someone else's cause.

  14. Powerful and intense ... you have woven your words really well and that imbues the piece with a multidimensional, nuanced quality.
