You came to me on a sweet summers dream
Passing through worlds of magic and men,
A dragon fly guarded the gate between
You’d sing and dance in this beautiful glen.
Now most of us find it hard to conceive
Of the parallel world of our ancient way,
Listen so hard and you must believe
Open your eyes let your mind run away.
Do not be fooled by her beauty and charm
Her pretty little nose and delicate wings,
Her mystical magic may well do you harm
If you don’t respect all of nature s things.
You came to me on a sweet summers dream
Passing through worlds of magic and men,
I wonder if you will come here again,
To sing and dance in this beautiful glen.

the image so elusive in dreams...haunting and beautiful 'cause we can endlessly fantasize about it... like what you've done with 'dragon fly'.
ReplyDeleteHi Humbird, thanks for dropping by and leaving your thoughts
DeleteWhat a magical dream deftly captured..like a fairy in a net - although as you say we must be careful with her..small doesn't always mean powerless.. I know a certain little lady who belies her beauty and charm - very much enjoyed being swept along in the magic
ReplyDeleteThanks Jae, we have to keep on the right side of the fae folk. Your thoughts always appreciated
DeleteI love how you return to your first lines at the end. This really adds a ballad-feel to your poem, and rounds it out well.
ReplyDeleteI really like the ethereal quality of this poem!!
ReplyDeleteThere is something so magic.. like those magic beings we once feared and craved at the same time... In Sweden there is a mythical being called the Hulder... (Huldran)... Not exactly benign though
ReplyDeleteHi brudberg, thank you for commenting, I shall have a look at the mythical being you talk of.
DeleteExcellent poem. I like the little bit of darkness in the third stanza. It takes the reader unawares.
ReplyDeleteClever.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment Richard.
DeleteThis is lovely and magical - when a haunting minstrel-esque cadence to it, that carries the reader away. In fact, it begs to be read aloud, with, perhaps, the lightest whisper of a stringed instrument.
ReplyDeleteHello Wendy, I'm so pleased you enjoyed it, and it was written in my to be used in the way described with the light touch of a classical guitar.
DeleteI wonder if you will come here again,
ReplyDeleteTo sing and dance in this beautiful glen.
As often the case a dream may be elusive when one craves for it. Still it is better to have one and hoping for it than having no expectations at all!
Hank
